'Developing' Medical Protocols: A human factors-informed approach to designing medical protocols that optimize effectiveness and utility
Publications Category : Emergency Medicine
Author(s): Paul Misasi
Project Description : No task of an EMS medical director has more impact on so many lives as the creation, or recreation, of medical protocols. Still today, little is known about how paramedics use medical protocols, what they need and want from them, or how they influence clinical decision making, for better or worse. In this presentation, I will describe the findings from my dissertation research - a cognitive systems engineering approach to the design of medical protocols that will guide developers of protocols to bridge the gap between work as imagined and work as done.
Additional Informational : Presented at the annual meeting of the National Association of EMS Physicians, January 10, 2025 in San Diego, CA.
